But that doesn\u2019t mean we shouldn\u2019t bother trying. After all, we don\u2019t create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessenglishpod.com\/2020\/11\/23\/bep-367-business-english-scenario-planning-1-discussing-the-situation\/\" title=\"BEP 367 \u2013 Scenario Planning English 1: Exploring the Situation\">business strategies<\/a> based only on today\u2019s realities. We need to think about what will or might happen and how we will respond to these possible events.<\/p>\n<p>So if we\u2019ve done the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessenglishpod.com\/2020\/12\/07\/bep-368-business-planning-meeting-2-discussing-possible-scenarios\/\" title=\"BEP 368 \u2013 Scenario Planning 2: Discussing Possible Scenarios\">laying out future scenarios<\/a>, then how exactly do we plan our strategic responses? To start, you\u2019ll need to choose an overall strategic posture. Are you going to take the lead in your industry? Or will you sit back and respond to things as they happen?<\/p>\n<p>Your strategic posture depends in part on the possible impacts of future events and your choice of strategies. You need to discuss these impacts in order to choose the best course of action out of several possibilities. So this means you\u2019ll be doing a lot of discussing alternative strategies.<\/p>\n<p>In strategic planning, we often say that you can have anything you want, but you can\u2019t have everything you want. For this reason, you will have to ask your team to prioritize, or decide which strategies are most important. And to make those decisions about priorities, you\u2019ll need to discuss hypothetical results of different actions.<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s dialog, we\u2019ll rejoin a meeting of executives at a large retail firm. Gwen is based in the US headquarters. She\u2019s discussing strategies with Natasha and Daniel, who head up the firm\u2019s operations in another country. The group is discussing strategic responses to future scenarios they\u2019ve already mapped out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listening Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\tWhat strategy does Daniel suggest for their
